Sameer & Mallika's Wedding in New Delhi, India
Sameer and Mallika are the perfect couple for an 'Opposites-Attract-and-Fall-in-Love' story, and their wedding at Tivoli Resorts Chattarpur was as filmy as a movie!
How we met:
We met in Emlyon Business School in Lyon, France during our Masters. It was not love at first sight, though. In fact, initially, we hardly spoke to each other. It was only when we went on a trip with mutual friends that we became really close friends.
One of our friends even goes to say that our story is like a cute Bollywood love story. Come to think of it, he’s right in a way! I mean it’s all there – boy meets girl; initially they don’t like each other; they spend time together; they become friends; he starts to like her; she feels she likes him too; he asks her out; she gets confused and says no; he continues to be there for her in difficult times; she finally comes around and thus begins their journey together.
I know this sounds clichéd, but it’s true – sometimes the best relationships begin with friendship and you fall in love with the most unexpected person at the most unexpected time. And it’s beautiful!
Why unexpected you ask? Well that’s because we are so different. I am jumpy and he’s grumpy. He’s lazy and I am a little crazy. He’s caring and I am demanding. He’s shy and I am bindaas (carefree)! But the fact is, we complement each other superbly. He has taught me to be lazy and I have taught him to act crazy (in a good way, of course). I am now a little less jumpy and he’s seldom grumpy (and, of course, more bindass!).
It’s been over 2 years since we have been together (count 3 if we consider my ‘confused’ time period). Our story has been like a nutty chocolate – with sweet raisins, crunchy walnuts and, sometimes, a bitter almond or two.
And we are now sure that we want to be together, forever and ever.
Well, like any wedding prep, even our wedding had too many details and things to manage. Initial planning is always stressful, especially the venues and deciding the wedding planners. But once we decided our wedding function venues, a little stress was reduced. Then came the stress of wedding decoration. wedding gifts and dresses. I must confess, I acted like a Bridezilla, as I was always on my toes and constantly on edge. I am really not proud of it, though. But now that I think of that time, it always makes me smile and laugh. Trust me, you don’t want to forget the pre-wedding time, it is one of the best even with all the stress and chaos. Soon enough, we found Knotty Days and they helped us with our wedding planning, by giving us some wonderful ideas to implement and, honestly, made the whole thing much easier for us. One of our main concerns was taking good care of our guests, as most of our guests were visiting from outside Delhi and some from outside India. We had to take their arrival, stay and departure timings into account and ensure that everything went smoothly and comfortably for them.
Feelings on the Big Day:
Well, it was a 3 day event and it went by like a dream. Even almost after a year, I still have the perfect memory of the day, as if it was only yesterday. I was not nervous at all on the first two days; in fact, I was like a crazy happy bride, enjoying every moment. This is one advice I give to all my bride-to-be friends, to enjoy their day, have fun, laugh, be crazy and make it memorable.
On the third day however, realisation struck when I entered the venue with my dad, as I saw my entire family and all my friends standing in a line, showering us with flowers. That was the moment I felt weak in the knees, but it was also the moment I was ready to take that step ahead and start a new journey with the love of my life!!
It was such a mixed feeling, of being excited, nervous and happy, all at the same time.
Wedding shopping was not that stressful for me. My sister really helped me with everything. Also, the fact that I have my own bespoke and couture label called Peach Loft by Anjali made things easier. My dress was designed by me and my sister.
I wanted to keep the Indian tradition alive, yet wanted it to be different. So I opted for a scarlet color with a lot of intricate details all over the lehenga. It has been inspired from Indian aesthetics, mainly from the golden period and the ancient era. I wanted to go for glitter and lace of 1920’s grandeur, the modern day maharani look.
Schedule of events and outfits worn on each function:
I decided to wear something different on each event. For my Engagement, I chose a peach colored high waist skirt and blouse with a hand embellished beige jacket, inspired from Pakistani designs.
For my Mehendi, I wanted a traditional look with lots of color, so I opted for a skirt with gotta laces and work.
For the evening Cocktail, the theme was Retro-to-Metro, so I chose a silver and steel grey gown with black gloves, adorned by a cocktail ring and styled in a vintage hairstyle with dark makeup.
The wedding venue was at Tivoli Resorts Chattarpur. We wanted a place with minimum 50-60 rooms, and this resort was perfect. Plus its LPT area provided a great venue for my Mehendi function, what with the whole train look and feel. We had booked two more hotels for our guests nearby. Our Engagement was held at The Leela Hotel in Gurgaon.
Performers and Performances:
We had a blast at our Cocktail. There were a few surprise performances and we were totally awed by all the 15 performances or more. I would like to add: the practice period was crazy and you must record it as it’s so much more fun to watch later on.
Few words on the photographer, videographer, hair/make-up artist, bartenders and DJ:
Everybody was great. They helped us make our day memorable. Nikhil and his team at Knotty Days took care of everything and made it a smooth process.
Pratishtha Arora did my make-up from Rupasso. Usually I am really skeptical about someone touching my face, but she made everything so easy. I loved the looks she gave me and her make-up was impeccable. The thing I liked the most was that she was very patient with my demands and one million questions!
Advice for to-be-weds:
I think effective communication is the key for better understanding. You need to tell each vendor what you expect from them.
