INTERVIEW: Ruta JurkuvenaiteFreelance Photographer
Starting photography as a hobby at the age of seventeen, Ruta Jurkuvenaite is now a freelance fashion and wedding photographer in Dubai. We speak to her about her passion for photography and what life is like behind the camera.
Ruta, how and when did you start wedding photography?
I started wedding photography when I was seventeen. I shot my aunt’s wedding, and discovered the enjoyment that comes with shooting weddings; from the moments shared between the bride and the groom, to the excitement from all the friends and family surrounding them.
Did you go to a photography school/academy to study photography? Why did you choose this profession?
I didn’t study photography, but, during my Business Management BA I was working with photography companies in my free time. I have been shooting since I was 10, when found an old film camera at my grandmother’s house, and since then it’s been a passion of mine. I feel lucky that I have been able to make a living from a lifelong ‘hobby’.
What makes your brand different from the others and what do you offer your clients?
I always try to meet my clients before the shoot so we get to know each other better. It definitely makes both sides more comfortable on the wedding day. The other thing I always do is shoot as many beautiful bridal detail shots as I can – I love love love catching beautiful moments for couple portraits!
How would you describe your photography style?
Detailed, neat, reportage, happy and full of love!
How many weddings do you average per year?
Western & Local together – around 30.
Which is your favorite wedding location in the UAE?
I love Jumeirah Al Qasr hotel venue near the beach as it’s such a beautiful location for couple portraits on the beach. Another favorite would be the Dessert Palm resort – so much greenery and flowers! And One and Only Royal Mirage which is an amazing hotel.
What do you feel is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?
Trying not to cry through the ceremony and speeches!
What advice would you give to the couple before shooting them? How do you make the bride and groom, and bridal party feel relaxed in front of your camera?
By meeting them before the wedding and discussing the timeline for the day. Also on the wedding day I try to make them laugh, and try not to disturb them with too many questions.
What type of cameras do you shoot with? Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during a wedding?
I shoot with Canon cameras. I use flash only when it’s quite dark or to get that little spark in the eyes. I usually use lighting setup for details and couple portraits, but, I always always make use of natural light. I love shooting at beautiful locations outdoors.
How important is Photoshop in your final images?
I use Photoshop and Lightroom, and it’s a big part of the process. Here I can make my images vibrant and beautiful.
What are the different packages that you offer for weddings?
I offer full day package (up to 10 hours) and also half day (up to 5 hours). I do pre-wedding couple shoots as well.
Would you travel overseas for a destination wedding if required?
Yes, definitely! Anywhere in the world.
