Guest Post: Wedding Registry in India

You’ve just had a fairytale wedding, the one that you’ve always dreamt of since you were a child. But when you open the presents the next day, it turns out to be a nightmare. One friend who recently got married said she’d received so many kitchen appliances and crockery sets that she could set up a restaurant! Another said that the gifts she received were really of no use to her and was clueless how and where to accommodate them.

On the other hand, as guests, we spend days deciding the gift, create WhatsApp groups and end up buying something we think the couple would like.

Have you experienced this? I have! Not once or twice but multiple times, as a guest. But this was until I chanced upon wedding gift registry websites in India. While gift registries have been hugely popular in the west, the concept is yet to catch up in India.

So what is a wedding gift registry?

Gift registry is a service that assists couples in the communication of gift preferences to wedding guests. Couples can select gifts they want as wedding presents and then send a message to their close friends and family to let them know of their preferences.

How does it work?

For the Couple

The process is very simple. All you’ve got to do is create, share and receive.

  • Create – Sign in and create your login ID and password on the website. Select the gifts you want from the wide range of options that the website offers and add them to your wish list.
  • Share – You will receive a unique URL, which you can share with close friends via email or social networking sites so that they can buy the gifts for you.
  • Receive – The registry will keep a track of your gift givers, gifts and contributions so you can focus on your wedding.

Once a guest purchases a gift from the wish list, it gets deleted so that other guests don’t buy the same gift.

For the Guests

Once you receive the URL from the couple, you can purchase the gift from their wish list just like you purchase from any online shopping site.

Its simple, hassle-free and beneficial to the interest of both parties.

Advantages of a registry

Wedding registry avoids duplication of gifts and offers prospective couples a cool way to start their life with gifts and experiences that are memorable. On the other hand, guests who have no idea what to gift and frequently resort to recycled or unusable gifts, can now choose a gift that appeals to them as well as fits into their budget.

Is India ready for a gift registry?

I asked this question to a lot of friends who recently got married and largely got a positive response. People are getting more practical (at least urban India is). It is expensive to set up your home as a newly married couple and it would be great if guests could give them something that could help them start their journey and not burden them with unwanted gifts. Modern Indian couples are definitely wiling to give this a try.

Gift Registry in India

Weddingwishlist.com, launched in February 2016 is an Indian wedding gift registry website started by Kanika Subbiah, who chooses ‘practical’ over ‘bizarre’ when it comes to gifting. The website has received an amazing response within the few months itself. It is user-friendly and you can customize your wishlist page with a cover photo and profile picture to make your page more exciting and personalized.
